Young woman enjoying sunlight in canola fieldSpring is here…. Finally! It has been a long, laborious winter and I am welcoming the warmer weather and sunny skies. This is one of my favorite times of year. The sun comes out, the birds are chirping and the windows and doors are opened to the world again. So naturally, I have a compulsive need to “clean” the winter away. If you are anything like me, you have a game plan and a checklist.  If you don’t, you can find one of my favorites here . However, even the best checklists forget some things. Here are a few that I find are highly important and easy to forget.

Clean your doormats.Brown house shape welcome mat

Shake them out, wash them, beat them with a broom. Whatever you need to do. Your doormats are your first line of defense against dirt and grime being tracked in and we all know the best offence is a good defense.  Using a hybrid mat will provide both absorbency and scraping functions to lessen the amount of dirt going into your home.

Wash woodwork, cabinets, baseboards and walls.

Though most grime will fall to the carpet over the course of a year, enough of it clings to vertical areas that it should be cleaned up at least once a year. Spring is a great time for that! Soap and water generally work best for this. Tip: Use a sponge mop to get to those hard to reach spots.

Clean ceiling fixtures.Cleaning Bathroom Fan Vent Cover with Sponge

Remove dirt and dust from ceiling fans, chandeliers and heating/cooling vents. A good tip for this is to cover the object with an old pillow case first, then dust with it covered. All the dirt falls into the pillow case, and not in your hair, eyes and carpet.

Spring Tip

Those open windows and doors can cause damage.  Be aware of where the sun rises and sets in your home. You carpet and upholstery can be damaged by direct sunlight over time.  Make sure to utilize blinds, shades, curtains or awnings to help protect them in the future.
